Its not a gasket. Im pretty certain the fsm and parts sheets list it as a spacer as well.

regardless it still makes a seal around the tranny. i can clearly see a small gap. i did wash down my engine bay before i took out my tranny yesterday and it sure enough it did have moisture in there. Ben whos tim?

Why else would it be there? clearly it dosent space anything out of importance because some are running the spacer and some arnt and the cars arnt blowing up. if it was so important i would think nissan would have just welded the stupid thing there so it wouldnt come off...

Its not a gasket. You have a det block in the nx. There would be no gap with a de block. I'm with the plausibility that its there to prevent aluminum on aluminum hate crime as it is a high stress area. Aside from that, moisture can get into the bell housing from your flywheel inspection cover just the same. That's not an airtight area unless you seal it with gasket maker.

yea but how likely will it be for water to go in a hole thats already level with the ground vs a long gap from the top to the bottom? i see where your coming from cliff

Maybe they'd rather it not sit directly tranns to motor. Maybe it acts as a type of cushion support?

Well my understanding is it does this:

Gives correct spacing for flywheel from the engine block. Also keeps the flywheel from contacing block surfaces when it warps.

Also gives correct spacing of starters. Doesn't matter if it's mounted towards the engine or the trans.

Like almost every spacer you would use on something, gives some sort of mounting strength to mounting points for all parts involved. Remember this is a steel plate. compared to soft aluminum.

Last, This may apply to autos more then manual, keeps dirt not water out of the bellhousing. Because of the friction being apply the water will quickly dry up (think about your brakes). However, if dirt gets in there (can even be small as sand) it's going to cause some damage to everything from TBs to your flywheel. Sometimes it will even work it's way into your rear main seal.

Guys, I have left it off before. DON'T leave it off.

I would hear a strange knock every now and then, when I took the transmission off I could see rub marks on the inside of the bell housing where the pp had made contact with the inside of the transmission bell housing. Of course, it made it's own clearance. Rubbed right in!

That's when I realized that it is important. Wouldn't wanna smack the inside of the casing so hard it cracks or something. But it really does just seem like a spacer.... now it's original function may not be known, but keep it in there just in case. Because that's what I experienced when I left it out once.

X2 on the rubbing inside the bellhousing. I noticed that too when I left mine out.
