Yeah that spline couldnt be pressed on because it is what actually keeps the gear as one with the input shaft when its engaged. Ive got a trans at my old house that has the gearstacks in it but it also had 5th gear popout and was also forcfully held in gear so if it took a couple bouncing hits popping in and out while holding it, It probably has the same damage yours does so I wouldnt risk it. Id find someone with a good one or call Greg V and see if he can get you a new input shaft.

I would not re-use that one, filed teeth or not. No way, no how.

Get a new one or very clean pre-owned.

2 cents.

In case anyone is wondering, a brand new OEM Nissan input shaft is on back order. When we're talking about a car that's 20 years old, I don't know if that's a very good sign!

A friend was nice enough to give me another B13 SE-R RS5F32V - also with 5th gear pop-out - to possibly scavenge for a good input shaft, but it was another bust.

The splines on this one are worse: rounded off. Lots of play when you slide a new syncro hub onto it.

So, back to the drawing board.

That's so weird. I've seen my fair share of input shafts and replaced 5th gear hubs on all of them. None of them showed any wear at all. =/

Yeah the pounding that that piece takes when it slams like when holding it in gear and it still tries to pop out is pretty rough. Only way your gonna find a good one is from one that just started to pop out and that they didnt try to hold in gear at all. Or one that doesnt have 5th gear popout.

Another boooo for the crappy 5 speed trannies.

My 5th gear failed on a 2,000 mile road trip up the East coast and back. It started around DC and got bad up in New England. On the way back it popped out over and over again. I started shoving soda bottles between the passenger seat bolster and the shift lever, and used bungee cords to keep the thing in gear. Eventually it just gave up and would no longer stay in gear no matter what I did it would just pop out. I traveled the last 300 miles or so in 4th gear.

When I tore it down, the splines on the input shaft were in pristine condition. O_o
