electirc steering pump from mr2
Saw a thread from 2009 talking about this, been back and forth on looped lines or a manual rack. Noticed someone said later modle early gen mr2's had a resevoir mounted on top of the pump. Any Idea what year? All the ones I've seen dont have one.

some sw20 mr2s had it. here's what the frunk area looks like on one equipped with the electric pump:

you can see the reservoir on the right side of the car and the pump on the left, next to the steering shaft.

The 2000 or 2001 mr2's have a pump w/ reservoir that sits in the front left corner of the frunk. They go out all the time apparently. I worked at toyota and had to replace one of them. New one came with just the pump and had to swap the reservoir from the old one. Pretty easy to do and looks like a pretty simple design. Its got a feed and return to the rack and one single electrical connection.

Really doubt that that specific pump is worth it. I had the same thought a while back, but the pump alone draws 50-90amps during operation. For the alternators that would be hell. I mean the avg alt is what 110 amps for our cars.

(I know the 90amps is at full lock, dont quote me on the regular operation draw)

I dont think they draw that much amps, I think the fuse for them is a 30 or 40 amp fuse. I cant recall if they stay on at all time or if they are pressure activated and turn when pressure changes in the steering drop or rise. Youd have to look more into it. Just throwing the info out there on the years that they came from.

At full capacity it does draw 92 amp, of course full capacity is full lock, and when do you actually lock out anyways. But its also a variable pump, controlled by its own linkage AND computer to the steering column.

That's what I was looking for, thanks Ashton. Couldn't find much on somedata but it looks like it operates on a 50 amp fuse. I know some other makes and models swap these as well so I'll see what else I can find and post back.

Could always use a Nissan Quest alternator with some modifications, they run 115/125 amps.

Found these specs as well:

92-95 MR2 EHPS
Draws over 75+A at times

00-05 MR2
Requires only 50A Fuse & Relay
Draws 4A @ Idle
Draws 40A @ Full Load

MORE info, interesting alternative to on off switch:

"Although 50 Amp relay is stated, I couldn't find one so I used typical 40 Amp automotive relay, my testing shows that it doesn't actually reach 50 Amp current anyway.

You can wire VSS signal from your car to make the pump turn itself off at higher speeds, but I couldn't manage that because my Miata has unusual VSS signal. Even without VSS, the pump runs idle at 4 Amps until you actually turn the steering wheel, so the power wasted is very minimal."
