Hit up the Dollar Store and look for LAs Totally awsome cleaner, works pretty good let it soak then hit it with a brush..

I use that or formula 88, the main thing is to let it soak.

brake cleaner and simple green. A little scrubbing will be required. I cleaned the block and a ton of other parts this way before I put my motor back together.

I tried oven cleaner on my block where there was black carbon buildup from a leaking manifold gasket. Didn't work.

I wonder why more people don't use wheel cleaner? It has a compound of acids that are used for taking off brake dust.

What he said. I used that, and a (new) toilet brush. Let it soak for a minute then scrub really well, rinse, and repeat. I did this at a self serve car wash with a pressure wash. Looked like new afterwards.

Formula 88 x2 here Jay.

Atleast that's what I use on my motor and firewall for the most part.
