no biggie...there's actually this stuff called freeze off that I've been meaning to try, I think it's some kind of rust converter. Flakes rust off.

Crvette69 its just the picture. The portion of the lobe that does not have rust is still shiny.

Doesn't look too bad. Probably want to replace that camshaft but it will still run for sure.

The story I'm getting from jdmenginezone is that they pressure wash the engines and sometimes the liquid gets in the valve cover.

They actually said, yeah we shine them a bit or else they won't sell at all we think and let you deal with the damage, that all engines have, so we told you some engines, well, we got another 3.

Locking up water inside the engine with some oxygen, with a way to vent (how did the water came in, you say?) makes steel rust like hell.

I can't believe it that is what they said.

Well if you need new cams, I have a spare head that is just chilling here with stock cams in it. Make a reasonable offer on the cams and they are yours. Honestly, I don't know if I would worry about it. After running for a bit that rust will go away I think.

The problem with rust is, over time, it can make puts that grow slowly bigger like the scars on the Mars surface. Some rust you ideally make go away with a sponge and some soap, leaving an intact surface shouldn't give problems, however on the other hand, if there is a tiny little damage, that will wear out bigger and bigger, just like how rust develops.

I'm guessing any damage bigger then the oil film can fix, will increase wear to a point to even where it breaks down way to soon due to damage.

I would not be worried since the rust on the photo seems fresh. It still is a no fun thing though, the abuse by the owner!

Well, I could have said nothing, Ben answered this already. I'm go play with my spindle.

Making a mountain out of a mole hill here! Take the cam out and rub it down with some fine (1200) sand paper and some WD40, then clean them down with some brake cleaner or white spirits. I have seen far worse cams that cleaned up fine
