Possibility? Maybe your axle is sliding in and out of the trans hole. A while back I had to replace the driver side axle seal, but it wasn't because that. When I installed it I tapped in in too far. It needs to be replaced if it's not flush with the outer edge of the case.

You'd notice clunking and leaking from an axle not seated properly, but not grinding. The gears on the shaft end are long enough to take up the difference of the circlip but it wouldnt slide so far out to make it grind on the final drive.
