Break-in Goo?
Cleaning out a motor I bought from a member on here and found a good bit of gray/silver sediment in the lower and upper oil pans and for shits I stuck a magnet to it and it is indeed magnetic. Now the motor is built with new ACL bearings, JE pistons, eagle rods and JWT S3 cams and inside is minty with no signs of this sediment, only in the upper and lower pans. The PO said the motor had no more than 8k miles on it and it looks like that is true by the condition of the head/block. The motor sat for a couple months with oil in it while the PO was going though setup changes and was not run. Typical for new motors to have 'break-in sediment/goo'?

Maybe someone came in the engine after they built in....

Truthully that just sounds weird. Ive never seen goo from the l series engines ive built.

Lubriplate maybe?

ARP moly lube possibly. Got any pics of it shimmering?

some builders apply assembly lube pretty generously (I do as well) but after 8k miles? you figure thats at least 2 (should be more like 3 or 4 if break in was done right) oil changes it really should have flushed out by then....most assembly lubes are moly-b based but having metal in them is not good. bearing material is usually goldish in color....if its shiny like aluminum, the only other guess is that the block had machine work and the oil galleys werent flushed right. Alot of machine shops dont bother pulling the freeze plugs and oil galley plugs and only hot tank the block. you would be surprised how much crap/shavings can get trapped in those oil galleys and eventually flush out once the motor runs and sees continuous oil pressure/temperature, etc.

But you stated it was magnetic, meaning its a ferrous metal like steel, etc... the only thing I can think of thats steel are the cylinders/cams/crank/rods and hardware (screws, washers, etc.)..... definitely weird...

It's grease of some sort, it wasn't alot but enough to notice. Just the way it feels and the way it smears when you try and wipe it away.

After I wiped it off:

Mixed with brake clean:

Assuming that some of the metals that wore in during break in combined with the assembly lube and just kinda stuck on the pans.

I have never seen assembly grease after 8k miles but it doesn't look like sludge so I am guessing maybee it was just junk that was stuck in the oil galleys and then mixed with the fresh oil gave you that.

My guess would be cylinder wall plus piston ring dust mixed with coked oil. Break-in goo. But what do I know?

Might be anti-sieze compound.

Yeah, looks relatively normal to me. I use the moly ARP lube and that stuff leaves residue.
