Thread: WTF???Axle nut

No way is a regular impact going to get it tight enough in my experience. If you can loosen the nut with a breaker bar then it is much too loose. You need it tight enough so that you need a long cheater bar to break it loose.

Just to be clear, you need the thing that looks exactly like this:


It slips OVER the nut itself.

^^^ I've always used an impact and never had it back out,, even went without cotter pins cause i swapped axles/clutches that much

And? That impact gun isn't going to tigheten it enough... You can't be a pussy about it.. sounds like in your case you need to get a breaker bar that goes all the way to the rear tire I had the same problem when I tightened it with about 15" of wrench... Added a breaker bar and BAMM

This thread makes me want to re-tighten mine :/

It was only tightened w/an impact and I don't think very tight.

well the nut behind your steering wheel is always loose. nothing you can really do there!

Mine gets stuck and never loose so i dunno.

From what I have seen , at least for the B14's ... they didnt come with the cage from the factory ... my '98 SE and '99 SE-L didnt .... and I see many of these come through my shop and always think its strange they didnt come with them ... Just the nut and cotter pin ...

my turbo car never broke loose and this one used to all the time. i use the breaker bar method till it won't move. i'm paranoid bout it because i lost a wheel bearing cause it kept coming loose. if you have the cage thing ben posted it should be an issue unles you anit getting on tight enough. impact is not enough in most cases..

Jen, find a man around the shop to tighten it for you...

If the nut is backing out after you tighten and cotter then the axle is not seated completely in the hub... I found that out the hard way... Even after I thought it was it wasnt... This was on the car I just bought... the bearing ended up being DESTROYED.

i have always use a impact gun and never had this problem. Now out of a sudden it wants to come out. I will put it up on the lift tomm and torq it to spec. So what is the exact number they are suppose to be at?
