Ah, this. I forget sometimes that they shaved the head down on the SR16 N1 to give higher compression.

So it is pointless to have on a regular DE or VE unless you shaved the head down a lot. And in doing so, you would likely require cam gears as well to fix the cam retarding that would happen as a result.

This could be it. Perhaps certain years took the older style. I know my 98 was the same, as well as 99. They must have redesigned them. But at any rate, every single one that I have had has been the same. VVL, or otherwise, has had the finer teeth.

I know that the slack between the cam gears tightened up a little bit after I installed the re-designed tensioner. I was pleased with my purchase.

The did redesign the tensioner. If you order the old part number they will give you a new style one. I think the new one was released in 98.

got a question relating to timing chain tensioner's... i replaced my tensioner about 3.5yrs ago about 40,000 miles back to the new style one.

lately, on cold starts for a few minutes until the car is warm i'm getting some ticking which i think is the chain hitting the guide between the cams. once the car is warm after a couple mins the ticking is gone. Can the new style tensioner go bad?

Oil pressure is good and have had a new oil change less than 300 miles ago.

With the new chain tensioner, the guide is now pointless.

ordered the n1 tensioner. when installing th tensioner and you put the little clip on with the plunger in, it decompresses itsself right? after its all tightened right?
