Please dont tell me this is the 3rd car I've killed in 6 months
I get off the highway and I'm sitting at the traffic light on the exit ramp and I see steam, I look at the scan gauge and its 275wt, I shut it off, light goes green start it up, sounds like no oil for a second while starting, get over 3 lanes to the side of the road, shut it off open hood, steam is coming from under intake manifold, open oil cap, oil doesn't smell right but the level is fine, wait for it to cool down some and open radiator, not much in there so I put whats left in overflow into radiator and what I had in a bottle in the car, start it up without rad cap on and steam comes out while car is running

The car has a vvl, approx 70000 miles on engine, is it the head gasket? Or is the engine dead?

UPDATE: pics in post #21 on 2nd page

Could be a heater core hose behind the engine (or one of those water neck hoses), or possibly the water pump seal failed. Something like that.

any color smoke coming from the exhaust, if it were a HG you would be burning coolant.

The thing is I have no idea how long I was driving it while it was over heating, I just got done work at 7:15 and drove for 52 miles down the highway and I noticed it on my exit

My main question would be how long can the vvl engine survive while its overheating before something goes seriously wrong inside the engine?

Dont know I didn't have it running long enough to check that, I dont want to run it not knowing how much coolant is in there, I'm getting it towed to my house which is 3 miles away

well i mean i wouldnt suggest just driving around on it overheating, i wouldnt take a chance that if it was a simple problem, driving around with it like that may cause it to become a serious problem, ie: headgasket

i would definitly pull the spark plugs check those out. then do a compression check and see wherre you are there to determine weather or not its a headgasket, then if its not. it could be a hose issue, but weed those out before comtinuing on

I've got $20 riding on the heater hose under the intake manifold. Either it cracked, or it's loose and has been spewing coolant. You didn't smell anything during your commute?

No the a/c was on recirculate, and I was driving into the sun so I couldn't really see the gauges driving home

Its one of them big hoses under the intake manifold, and above the oil filter, I guess the intake manifold is coming off to get to that, where do I get that hose today nissan?
