Cylinder was almost empty of oil this morning. Piston will be out in the next day or 2.

but once you pulled the head there was visibly something wrong when looking directly at the piston right?
The major carnage was on the side but the piston looked suspicious...

What leaves me with no clue of the issue is that the OP says he already pulled the head and that everything looks ok except for some weird small marks that could be valves touching the piston, but at least in my case, when one of my exhaust valves was not sealing, it had 0 compression but the air was coming out the exhaust since the exhaust valve had a slight seat problem...

Maybe it does have a hole in the side like happened to nismotuner

maybe broken rings, or missing rings or something at this point since you have pretty much pinpoint the problem

damn that sucks, at least you figured the problem out. there isnt much scoring on the side of the pistons for such damage.

Cylinder wall is fine too. I also did not find any chunks or metal in the pan....
Oh well a new piston, set of rings and bearings and it should be all good. Looks like I will have to give greg a call.

That sucks. Its nice there is no other damage but how could that be if that huge chunk fell out? Unless it was installed like that? Without seeing everything together its hard to tell but i would inspect the rest of the pistons as well.
