if its a flat sacucer type youre f*%ked.
If its a cup type with a lip i normally use a pair of small slip jaw (waterpump?) pliers to grab the lip then lever it out.

Otherwise drill a hole through the center so you can pry it out with a flat head screwdriver, pliers and gumption.

Wait, did you knock a welch plug into the block ?

Doesn't the block heater screw into a specific place on the back of the block, not replace a welch plug.

See picture above, i thought the block heater replaced the plug that has the allen head in the middle of it. (sorry if this is way off the mark)

Cozzm0, you're correct. (On the SR20 anyway.)

...if you can get anything with a point on it, onto it, use a nail/holepunch/awl to dig the point into it and slide it up.

If it's so far that the lip is covered, then, uh, just keep f***ing with it 'til it gets to the point where you can manipulate it. That's just my $0.02.

Happy hunting; keep us posted.

Its actualy called a freeze plug and they make a tool to pull them out but if you've pushed it in or dropped it into the coolant passage just pull it up and use a pair of vise grips to lock onto the lip then try to turn it on its side some and yank it out . good luck

Thanks for the help guys - here's what my weekend looked like:

Saturday - knocked the frost plug into the engine after 5 hours of monkeying with it. Tried to fish it out a bit with an awl - pushed it further down, then fell in. No possible way of getting it out EVER. F it. Put in a block heater with a butterfly screw to tighten it and seal. Tightened it, filled the coolant, leaked like a sieve. Lost all the coolant. Spent an hour and a bit prying out the damn block heater. got up noticed some coolant on my glasses, wiped them off, but found out there was a peice of salt on them, wrecking my glasses by scratching the SHAT out of them.

Sunday - closed, can't work on it. it's called a sabbath.

Monday - got a new frost plug from a reputable car parts shop - 35mm. Banged on it for an hour - concluded that it must not be the right size. Found out about an expandable type, picked up two different sizes. Both didnt fit, but the smaller one fit with some 'help'. The distance from the hole to another part of the block wasn't very far, couldn't get it in all the way. Decided to try to torque it down. Torqued like a mother F'r. Filled it, ran it, ran ok and no leaks. Started cleaning my tools up when POW! HSSSSS - steam. Plug fired out the hole and coolant all over the ground. Turned off the engine ASAP. By this time a peice of rust had gotten in my eye and caused a laceration. Then some antifreeze got in it and infected the thing - so I was doing most of my monday with one eye - talk about a bitch for depth perception!

Got the right plug (30mm) from another parts store, and banged it in. So 2 days and about 12 hours combined working I'm back to square one with an extra peice of metal inside the engine. FML.

Maybe try fishing it out with a Neodymium magnet?

That will stick nice to the CAST IRON block.
