Getting my poor '94 Sentra worthy to travel 1700 miles
Firstly, let me embarrass myself by saying that I'm no avid car enthusiast. Probably going to be looked down upon at a place like this.. but.. so be it.

I'm moving this summer and I'll be driving from Long Island NY to Houston TX. It's a 1700 mile, 28 hour trip. I'll be driving with a buddy and we'll be taking shifts, so the car will be traveling pretty much non-stop.

The car's in... well, rather desirable condition at the moment. I'm going to be getting it put back on the road within the next 2 or 3 weeks, and I'll need to spread out repairs to get this thing road-worthy.

First thing's first is that it needs a new alternator. This is going to be done pretty much right as I get the car registered. I'll be buying it new, so I'll have not only a warranty but the peace-of-mind that it'll last me. Unless of course, any of you have one and would like to PM me with an offer on one.

Other than that, the car has a GA16 motor, with 117,000 original miles. Relatively low for a 17 year old car. I was thinking the following:

- Oil change a week or so before the trip
- New spark plugs
- New tires
- Fresh brakes
- Belts?

What else should I do to this car to make it so it'll last the long 28 hour trip? Cheers, and thanks in advance!

Reman alternators arent known to be very reliable. Nissan reman i heard is supposed to be better then local parts store reman.

Add:
fuel filter
air filter
check tire pressure and tread
fix any leaks

I'd add, on top of everything said, spark plugs, cap, rotor, wires, and brakes.

I'd do a complete tune-up, most of the components of which were already pointed out in the previous posts. If your brakes are fine then I wouldn't bother with them, you'll use them once every 500 miles. I would flush your coolant and do what ^^^ says. Check your belts and battery, replace PCV valve.

you are better off with an alternator from Andreas Miko off of a 40k mile motor from Japan, reman alternators may have a waranty, but the crapy part is that you'll HAVE to use it..
