Oil filters on SR20 and oil pressure readings
So I thought I'd see if anyone else has ever seen this. I had the weirdest experience over the weekend when I decided to go from a Mobil1 oil filter to a Genuine Nissan filter.
Cold start with 5w30 oil and Mobil1 filter on my VE I usually see 80PSI at 1500 on start up. pressure sits at about 30-40PSI at idle.. my idle ranges from 1000-1300RPM. Cruising on the highway at 4KRPM I see 100PSI.
I decided to do an oil change before the last track day and go with a Nissan filter this time as I've always been told they are the best out there for our cars. I threw it on Friday night and went to bed. Got up in the morning and started to drive to my buddies house to pick him up to go to the track and noticed right off the bat that my oil pressures were acting funny... peak pressure was still the same but between shifts the oil pressure would drop SUPER fast down to 40PSI and if I flicked my steering wheel to the left or right while driving even very slightly the oil pressure would go from 80PSI all the way down to 40PSI and bounce back up to 80PSI.
I am not sure if it has something to do with the Greddy oil sandwich adapter and the Nissan filter compatibility or what but we threw a Mobil1 filter back on the car and the sudden oil pressure drops went away.
Has anyone else ever seen this? I found it very odd, I probably won't use a Nissan filter again for now..

Doesnt that just say that the Nissan filter flows a little better? and that the Mobile1 is a little more restrictive? I would guess because the Mobile1 will filter down to smaller particles. I dont know for sure but thats what it sounds like to me. Is oil pressure dropping faster a bad thing?

Aren't Nissan oil filters now made by fram or something? I thought I heard that a while ago. Outsourcing FTL?

I would think oil pressure dropping that fast is a bad thing, say you are at the track and hit a corner at 50+MPH and your oil pressure drops to 40PSI or lower and you are hitting 6000RPM or higher then that seems a bit low for my liking, I'd rather like to see oil temps hold higher in situations like that to ensure proper lubrication at higher RPMs, this is my concern with what I saw with the Nissan filter.

At this point it would not doubt me. I know Subaru starting outsourcing theirs to HoneyWell last year.. I think HoneyWell makes Fram?

Sheesh, my oil pressure gauge doesn't even go up to 100psi. I get around 50psi on the interstate, at warm idle I'm around 10psi.

Ive always used the Mobil 1 filters on all my motors. On my built motor with a ve oil pump i would see 80-100 psi on cold startups just like you said. When warm at 800rpm idle i would see 25-40psi, Warmed up on the highway at 3500 rpms i would see 70psi or so and above 4000 when getting on it it would hold 80+psi.

Ive used other filters on other vehicles like STP and the oil pressure was definetly lower.

I stick to the Mobil 1 filters.

don't use the nissan filters. They are hot-glued-together POS filters nowadays. Champion Lab filters are the best as far as pressure drop goes. So Mobil and K&N FTW.

I keep hearing good things about other filters, but I have experienced the same thing as you tanner. I have a Fram TG on my car now only because it was what came with the oil special I got. But never again! I'm going back to mobil after this one.

I won't touch the Mobil stuff. The first time I used all Mobil equipment (Filter and Oil) I earned myself an engine rebuild an hour later. NEVER again.
