We had it scanned yesterday, and no codes came up. Took the maf back out and cleaned it again a little better, still no go. Checked the timing which appeared to be off. I re-set it and it still doesn't want to rev.

When you soft rev it to around 4500, it acts like it has a limiter on it. If you put the gas down more, the limiter drops about 1000 rpm and you can hear the car working harder. During this you car hear the exhaust popping like it's misfiring? (sounds like it has an aftermarket intake - but it's stock) It's all very weird. The car had the timing chains replaced not too long ago, but is making a lot of racket like the tensioners are still original.

edit: I can say that the more you drive it, the limiter starts dropping to lower RPM's. If we clean the MAF, it raises it back up.

If it still is a OBD1 car you might want to check engine codes with the help of a paperclip. On the other hand, that probably won't throw a code for the MAF or CAS.

agreed.

manually check the codes on the ecu then reset it, reground your maf

let us know what the out come is....as stated it sounds like its in safe mode

forgot to plug my cas when I put the ga16 back in the car and IIRC it wouldn't rev either.

That would be the CAS sensor.

(my) theory: the ECU is having a hard time to get the ignition timing proper so it is firing with valves open probably. This still wouldn't throw a code. The CAS sensor is still read but the values are off so it could even be the ECU is not aware the engine is pretty much undriveable, however it continues to adjust timing and injection times according to MAF and CAS values.

You might want to disconnect o2, this might give slight better running car. o2 needs to be connected or it will break down soon, so this is for testing only.

It can't be anything else AFAIK

He changed the maf today and it didn't fix it. I'm going to test the cas tomorrow.

Checked the cas today. Resistance is good across its connector. Getting proper voltage to terminal 3 on the 5 wire connector. Voltage to terminal 4 should be around 2.4 volts, and it came up 1.9~2.0. Replace the distributor? The previous owner changed the cap and motor, maybe they're bad?

I would get a second hand distributor, or a known good CAS. The reasoning is that MAF turned out good and it still has revving issue.

I not understand yet why CAS can act up so bad, I mean it is there, it doesn't throw code, but yet you seem to have an engine that fires erratic.

Right now the "limiter" is around 5500 rpm so he can drive the car around town with no problem. Some how we got it up that high. Still no codes. When he gets some money together we'll replace the distributor.
