Does a spun rod bearing affect the crank?
I can get a hold of a free highport shortblock with a spun rod bearing. I need a spare block to rebuild but i dont want it if the rod journal needs work other than polishing. Does this affect the rod journal on the crank? Is it worth rebuilding? Or is it something i need to tear down and inspect to know if the crank is good or bad?

you need to inspect, most likely you will need to do more than polish

you will have to have the crank inspected, maybe micro polished , but might be able to save it

depending on how exactly the rod spun and how long it was ran afterwards, the damage could have impacted the bearing more than the journal. if thats the case youre good to go and you can just polish the journals and do new bearings (you should always polish the journals prior to rebuild anyway. Its cheap and any machine shop will do it easily.

If the journal is damaged, you can safely turn down 0.25mm and just run the next size up bearings.

its also a good idea to have the crank magnafluxed to make sure there are no cracks anywhere...you never know what some people do to their engines

its probably ok, though...These cranks are generally very strong, especially the 8 CW

or just find a good condition crank from someone on here. It would be cheaper in the long run if your gonna take it out anyways.

Again depending on how long it was ran will affect how much damage occurs. But usually the reason why the bearing spins to begin with is because of oiling problems and metal to metal contact between the bearing and the crank and usually results in some scraping, more depending on if the bearing went back into place to keep getting oil or not.

Ive seen them not have too much damage, clean them up, put new bearings in, plastigauge to make sure oil clearances are good and had them run for a long while like that. But its rare.

^ i agree to get anoter non abused crank, even thoug yu can fix a bad cran its sketchy and i wouldnt want to rebuild a motor with good parts ndbad crank even if itcould be fixed still you never know

I'm with ashton in this one, rod knock is caused by the lack of proper lubrication and cause damage to the crank.

You can always inspect first anyway

If its just a de motor, you would almost be better to just get a jdm motor. End of story. Because there can be other things wrong, Rod gets out of round from the knocking and soo on. You would be best to just replace the motor. I got my jdm de's for 475.00 to my door from Soko.
