Thread: alternator noise??

i say alternator noise but i don't know. i have this weird "errrrr" noise when my car revs around 1500 rpm (92 Se-r). i thought it was my alternator so i just took the belt off and it went away. i have a couple spare alts laying around so i switched it out. #2 same noise. had a third one, same noise. if i leave the belt loose to the point it's almost slipping the noise isn't present. WTF it is i have no idea. cutting the ac on and off doesn't make it do it so i can't see that being it and it sounds higher up than the ac anyway. if anyone has had something similar happen or has any input it would be appreciated. thanks

ummm have you tried making the belt tighter?

uhhh yeah.... i wouldn't go through the trouble of changing the alternator and not check the belt. it's not something that just started, it's been like this for months but i'm kind of getting tired of the noise.

tried a new belt? i doubt that you have three altys with the same exacth problem

i wouldn't think so either. i haven't tried a new belt since it had plenty of life in it and it hasn't been long since i did change it. i guess it's possible it could be defective somehow.

i dunno. might as well try. i have a small noise and its pissing me off that im about to fix now

You don't have a small noise, you had a critical bolt missing from your alty bracket

well i changed the belt and the noise isn't as noticeable now, which is still weird to me how it affected it. i mean it's not a belt squealing noise. it's not as long and now it's right off idle when it does it instead of around 1500 or so rpm. i guess i'll just deal with it.
