I didn't measure. I just happen to have another engine laying around and I took shims from the same rocker. Even though they probably don't match.

You need a shim plate. Basically, it measures the difference between the non-adjustable shim (the one with the grooves) and the top of the valve that's missing the shim. Subtract the two and you know your shim size. It's a tad bit more involved than that, but that's the gist.

Oh, and for a REALLY simple way to solve your issue: If you know your head has never been molested, take another shim from another valve, and measure it. Then go buy the same shim. Apparently (contrary to what's been taught), all shims measure the same in a virgin head. Exhaust AND Intake. (Thanks Dre!)

The shims aren't as important (size difference) than previously thought. The HLA is the "god" as far as rocker arms and shims.

so why r ppl saying that it is soo important that i have the right shim size otherwise its gonna ruin the motor? i called the sr20 store in cali where the motor was bought n the guy said that all the shims are the same size n that its not as big of a deal as ppl make it....so can i just measure the shim that i found n order the same size n put em in?btw.....the shims r for cylinder #3 & #4 of the exhaust cams.
