I used some krylon to fix some fading and clear coat on my wife's car about a year ago and it's still holding up just fine. If things are prepped right you can really get some life out of rattlecans. More power to them for getting a rattlecan job to look that good.

Few things I would like to ask and address.

First of all, it's impossible to see in the vid, but how would you rate the orange peel?

As for the mirrors and door handles, which were previously unpainted plastic, I assume the unpainted parts still show when you pull on the handle or fold the mirror, yes?

Did you clearcoat? Does rustoleum make a clearcoat?

When you're paying for a car to be painted, you're paying for a lot of time, time time, and when you do it yourself, it's a lot of your own time, time, time, plus tools and a place to paint it. It's only $50 if you've already got the sanding and spraying tools and a place to paint it. Considering your buddy appears to already know a thing or 2 about spraying cars, I can't see any reason why you shouldn't just go ahead and pay a few extra bucks for some real duPont paint. You're already saving $1000 by doing the prep work and having a friend spray it.

One last thing, there's no mention of how thin the paint is when it's put in the sprayer. I'm almost positive you want to thin the paint down with mineral spirits till it's just about as thick as water before you spray it onto your car, is this correct?

It's not a totally bad system you have, I've seen it done before with rustoleum, it's something I'm considering for my blue car, but I need to do a lot more bodywork. Also, I'm a big fan of removing the lights and bumpers before spraying.

also i dont think they factored in that the guy has a gravity feed gun and air lines to feed it to paint, i was expecting a plastic bag full of rattle cans. still looks good tho. hell lot better than mine right now

Forgetting the tool supplies, all of the cost that goes into painting a car is labor. Paint is a very small factor.

Sand, sand, bondo, sand, primer, sand, primer, sand, clean, wipe, mask, wipe, time to paint!

Before painting, I've already got a day's worth of work in the car. A shop would probably charge about $500+ for this alone, plus $100 in sanding paper, bodyfill, and primer. An individual would've spent about $100 in sanding paper, bodyfill, primer, and garage prep, assuming they already had a compressor, an orbital sander, and a mask. The bulk of my cost and labor is already spent. All the car needs is a spray and time to dry.
