I'll Miss You, 5th Gear
Fun stuff always seems to happen to me. Sort one issue, another is sure to surface.

While driving today, my 5th gear seems to have disappeared, completely. It went from engaging just fine to not engaging at all, just lightly grinding when trying to drive. It's time to crack open the case. Being the realist I am, I'm planning for the worst.

As far as repair goes, I need the most cost-effective way to get this back running while keeping my LSD. As easy as it would be to just buy another LSD transmission and throw it in, I'm nearly positive cracking this one open and repairing the gear stack will be much, much cheaper.

Can I use the gear stack from a non-LSD transmission and put it in my case to repair it? Also, anyone have any experience with this? I know that I'll need any help I can get to make sure this goes smoothly. Lastly, if anyone local has a transmission I can cannibalize for a decent price, let me know.

Thanks in advance guys. Nissan has a way of always keeping things interesting

LOL @ the thread title. Gears are the same from LSD to non-LSD, far as I know.

I wouldn't be so sure. If you have the typical 5th gear pop-out then you'll be replacing one gear and you could come out ahead. If for some crazy reason you ruined both input and output gears for 5th you're looking at above $200 for just those two gears.

Transmissions seem to run around $250-$350 around here, and my local pull-apart has all transmissions for $75 no matter what.

Just things to think about.

Basically what you're saying is it's probably going to be cheaper to repair than to replace the trans, yes? That was my thinking as well, but I've never had to deal with transmission repair before and don't really know what's worth what in our trans yet. Plus, I'd see $250-$350 for a regular transmission, but I'd think a LSD would bring in more than that, making it more cost effective to save my LSD trans.

No. Not saying that. I'm saying it could be cheaper, or it could be more expensive.

No. A LSD transmission will go for $250-$350 around here.

If you can fix your transmission with a gear and a few other parts you will come out ahead. If it requires two gears (both 5th gears) then you're getting in deep.

How did you kill the 5th gear on a B14 Trans? I guess it could be worse, if it was a P11 trans

Could you explain that a little further? I don't follow.

It's actually a B13 trans in my car. Don't know why, I bought it that way. Big thing that tipped me off was my lack of a crank position sensor.

The more I read, the more I'm feeling it has that common problem, and just needs that gear replaced. So far, my tally is about $200 including seals and fluids. But, this all depends on what I see inside the transmission. Nice thing is, with the pop-out thread we have here, it's really easy to know what you're looking for, and what means what. That, and the access to my shop tools makes this much easier.
