you're better off jacking the car up, grabbing the wheel from top and bottom and shifting it back and forth - if the lugs are tight, and the bj is blown, a clunk sound would be evident. a clunk sound whilest turning (clunk not a continual tap tap sound) would indicate tie rods.

Its been a while since I've done this, but I've done it dozens of times. You shouldn't even need to remove the tie rod. Only the 17mm strut-hub bolts and nuts.

In my experience, busted ball joints on a B13 were most noticeable on sweeping, consistent radius turns. What happened was the car started tracking wide, not keeping the line that I was steering into. I'd have to compensate by steering some more.

On a car like the Lexus SC300, a bad lower ball joint contributed a ton of steering vibration at virtually all times.

Time for new ball joints! I took the easy way with my SE-R (and the SC300), just bought new control arms with the new ball joint already installed.

Its a knock knock type sound. Continues with application of throttle during a tight slow speed turn. I did the wheel shake in/out. Also up/down. I did not see any movement that would indicate a busted wheel bearing. Also did not here a knock or see movement from the ball joint. I gave the knuckle a good shake to try to see if there was looseness or noise in the ball joint area but nothing.

I'm going to go with axle for right now. If it turns out its not my axle hopefully autozone will accept a return.

If the knocking continues I'll have to take another look at that ball joint. I'm definitely going to change the Ball joint out, but it will have to wait until I have more free time.

Thanks for the replies. It was good to get different ideas to work with.

Something else I noticed while I was removing the old axle. My lower ball joint boot is busted. Would a bad ball joint produce a knocking noise under slow speed turning?

Check the strut mount bearings...I bet they're shot. They cause the car to make a knocking noise in the suspension. More of a popping kind of noise though when you turn.
