But yeah the design doesnt look very good as well.

There is a normal (perpendicular) component of force in gear tooth action. The material under the teeth looks too thin. The teeth are hardened and that may have caused the base material to crack and fail.
Very poor design.

Mine has been working fine for 1 year and i bought it used. Has anyone ever had a problem with a jgy flywheel before this?

I don't believe so I think I'm the first I'm beginning to wonder if it was dropped. JenC suggested that to me. Compared to my other flywheels it's still pretty thin in that area where the starter turns it.

Definitely thin, however I am leaning toward either a manufacturing flaw, casting imperfection. Or it had been dropped. A sudden failure seems completely unlikely to me since no one else has ever had this problem. If it was a fatigue failure the failure would be identifiable in the way it fractured.

iirc jgy makes these from stock flywheels.

holy****.. crappy design. could have been worse.

How can you all condemn the design to be at fault when you have no idea the moment (rotational torque) the ring gear is subjected too when turning a motor over, or the load the current design is able to handle. It is entirely possible this failure was a fluke.

I know many hate jgy and I would never buy any other product from them, however it seems to be blind hate here. You all cannot say the design is crap when this is the first failure of the hundreds of flywheels they have sold.

Not to mention the owner has no idea how it was treated in the past.

I guess it doesn't really matter anyhow....

IMO, I'm not really hating on JGY, though they do sell a lot of garbage. Having been there to look at the flywheel in person, I said it was crap before even knowing who made it, then followed my statement with "I bet that's Jason's shit isn't it?!" And Jensen and Joel both started laughing. I wasn't really attempting to be serious, but Joel admitted that it was and I told them both that I hoped they had learned their lessons (remember, Jensen had a bad clutch disc from JGY, inferior disc design, that just went out on him a few weeks prior to Joel's flywheel giving out)

Bottom line: The flywheel is of SHITTY design. The surface of the teeth is so thin, I'm surprised the starter didn't devour it much sooner! The whole flywheel looks as if it were stock, and they simply used a drill press to take chunks out of it. Nothing about that flywheel looked CNC'd or heat treated after surgery.

Anyhow, at least he got himself a MUCH nicer replacement Competition Clutch makes a REALLY nice looking steel flywheel, that doesn't weigh much more than a Fidanza aluminum. And I'd trust the steel ANY day over an aluminum one.

Hopefully he has better luck with his new one
