Thread: Removing RTV from Oil Pans and Block

Hey everyone. I'm about to drop the pans on one of my engines, and I just wanted to get some different ideas on how to clean up the mating surfaces.

I've done this on my own before but I'm thinking there has to be a better or less toxic way then what I did.


The first time I attempted this I used a plastic paint scraper from homedepot and some Permatex gasket remover.

What I did not like about my way of doing it. The plastic scraper loses its sharp edge pretty quickly since the aluminum is harder than the plastic. I also didn't like the gasket remover because that stuff is pretty nasty. It stings bad if you get it on your skin and I'm sure the fumes can't be good for human beings. I made the mistake of spraying it on my lower oil pan and it made the paint bubble almost instantly. Luckily I had a spare pan available.

What methods have you guys used to clean the mating surfaces of the oil pans and block? I'm hoping to try something more effective and less toxic this time around.

i use a razor blade to get most of it off then get a scotch brite green pad to really clean up the surface. i don't think there's any real easy way of doing this but i found that way works best for me and leaves a perfect surface.

edit: paNX2K&SE-R and tunedser031 are right. for the lower pan, you kind of have to use a wire brush because of the grooves in the pan. good call.

My friend had this plastic attachment that went on a high speed drill. I don't know what you call it, but it made the surface looks brand spankin new. Took about 20 minutes to clean everything, but it was mint after.

PaNX2k and Tunedser did you guys use the wire brush for all surfaces? (Block,lower pan,upper pan)

i use an air grinder with a medium pad and it cleans it up perfect. for the grooves i usually use a small screwdriver and a razor blade to take care of it.

I use a brass wire wheel on my bench and angle grinder. Like these guys said, it makes it look brand new. They also make nylon wire wheels.

putty knife and lacquer thinner.

I use a die grinder also , with the MED and FINE pads after I strip the big stuff with a plastic scrapper ...works great !!
