Let's talk Cordless Impact Wrenches
What's good out there now?

I know...I know...it's Harbor Freight, but does anyone have long-term experience with this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96448

I'm also eying this:
http://www.toolking.com/dewalt_dw056k-2r.aspx

Do volts straight up compare one to another, or is it mostly a bragging number?

Is there one heads-and-shoulders best #1 choice out there for less than $200?

I have a dewalt cord one and I really like the quality and performance of it. I would definately choose the dewalt cordless over the harbor freight

found this little guy (bosch ps40) as i was tooling around home depot. it sells for $170ish and puts out around 800in lbs. thats alittle less than 70 ft lbs. but this is perfect for any interior work, removeing pretty much any 10mm and 12 mm that exists on the car. my buddy has a 3/8 snap on battery powerd impact driver at work and i use that thing CONSTANTLY. removeing 10mm on engine under covers, valve covers, installing drive belts, window regulators, brakes..............ALOT of stuff.

haveing something like this cuts work time in half because your not waisting minutes useing a rachet removing a long 10mm bolt. you hit the button and the bolt is all the way out in seconds.

Louis,

I've had the orange harbor freight 1/2" drive one for about 8 months or so...

Don't get the harbor freight cordless one unless you plan to only do small stuff with it. Honest to God, it doesn't even pop lug nuts... I know it says 200ft-lbs... but thats on a hot day in Greenland. But it does the (small) job.

You can't expect much more for less than 40 bucks. ::dance:: I do like it, but it's only for small stuff, pretty much anything with a 12-17mm bolt/nut. (Exhaust, Motor Mount Bolts, Flywheel Bolts, Pressure Plate, Trans, Loosening things mostly...) But I do use it when I have the space to use it. Oh yeah, and its 40 bones... didn't know if I expressed that... *cough* 40...

The nicest part about it is its variable drive depending on the pressure on the trigger... which is nice sometimes when u want to tighten something without impacting it slowly... and the replacement plan as well... u can just take it back to a local HB whenever u feel. Oh yeah... and its 40 dollars.

Main drawback is its size... its pretty monstrous. Two hands if your lying on your back holding it up.

thats what chris car recomends. 3.5lbs and packs 950 in lbs of TQ. should remove anything with up to a 14mm head. and plenty small enough to get into small areas and do all your interior work.

Sorry, meant to mention I need it mainly for lug nuts and suspension work.

Cordless so that I can use it at Rallycrosses.

Those Bosches don't apply, do they?

I guess HF is out, and I'll need to hover around $200. Any more reccomendations?

nope, bosche no good for that. you need a good name brand that supplies 200ft lbs at the very least. trust me when i tell you the cheap ones are garbage unless you enjoy useing really heavy tools on small interior work.

Is this a cheap-o?

I do want to get a good tool strictly for pit duties, but its critical (according to my wife!) I get a great performance/price ratio.

Northern Tool seems to sell good tools, but I don't know how well (or badly) their house brand performs.

I have the $80 orange 1/2" HF cordless impact, got it for $45 when it was on sale and I had a coupon. When the battery has a good charge its breaks lug nuts loose just fine. When the battery is a bit drained then I use a breaker bar to pop the lugs and then the impact to quickly spin them off. It save a lot of time either way.

Louis...youve used my dewalt...and welcome to it anytime.

when we compared my dewalt to Joe's Goodwrench he has...both was as usefull, but i think mine had the advantage of a bigger battery. but with most all them, as the battery wears down it is very gradual decrease in power. for a couple tire changes tho, its perfect. You can borrow mine anytime, its in the trunk of the altima almost all the time
