compression can be lost from a burt valve, bent valve, bad rings, cracked piston, crack piston ring land, sometimes you will notice a loss of compression from a bad head gasket.

with a cyl leak down test you can figure out EXACTLY what is leaking. by simply putting desired cyl at TDC on compression stroke and supplying shop air.

true, but a compression test is so easy to do that it's worth it just to make sure there is a problem. If you get good numbers, like 150~155, then you know to look elsewhere.

Have you checked MAF and for exhaust leaks? exhaust leaks make it sound nazty, and a bad MAF or one in need of regrounding would cause starting/idling issues.

this sounds exactly like a blown turbo. you can not have shaft play but have blown seals

check the intake tubing after the turbo for oil residue.
