I see in your sig that you have a swapped SR20, I'm guessing the car was originally a GA16? Have you always had problems with the coolant temp gauge?

Also pardon my ignorance on the swap but which gauge cluster are you using SR20 or GA16?

It's very intermittent, that's what makes this frustrating. yes car was orig a ga16, the swap was done 10 years ago. Not always a problem, the cluster is orig from the ga. but I have the GLE model Sentra which is identical to the 2.0 excluding the mph and redline on the tach.

I wonder if I just unplug the sending unit wire if this will help the drive-ability of the car until I can track the problem down. I know the car is running normal temp.

The SR20 has two temperature probes. There is one with just a single spade connector that only controls the temperature gauge on the cluster. There is a second sensor which has two prongs and this is the one that the ECU uses.

It is unlikely that unplugging the wire for the gauge sender will have any affect on the drivability.

I know there are two and I know what purpose they serve. just confused about this problem and not sure how to tackle it. If it were anything else, I'm sure it wouldn't be this frustrating.
