Determining gear ratios
Can someone please explain how you go about counting the gear ratios in a SR tranny?

  1. Is there a way to count it without opening the tranny up?
  2. With the tranny open how will you do it now?

look for a technical write up...or some kinda data chart...

or what youll do is identify which gear is which...theres two helical gears for every speed...one on the input shaft and one on the counter shaft..

what you must do then is count how many teeth are on each gear and divide the numbers by eachother...for instance for first gear if you get an absurd number like.095 you divided wrong....you should come up with 3.1 something or whatever and its to 1

lemme know if you got it ill try to dig more things up....this also applies to final drive gear

Thanks. I don't know a great deal about how the inside of tranny's work, although I get how actual gear ratios are determined.

With the SR tranny open, I wouldn't know for sure which gear is which. Any pics will be great. I'll also do some more searching.

I'm going tranny shopping this week end. I doubt they'd let me open the trannies up, so if at all possible is there a way to determine the ratios by plugging in a side shaft and turning a clutch disc on the input shaft?

I wish nissan put darn codes on the trannies. It's a pain in the a$$.
