a bit concerned,,
hey guys ,,, what are your thoughts on this??

I felt like my DE was getting close to tune up.,.,., after 4 oil changes @ 4,200 - 5,400 miles in between each .,., mobil 1 syn, k&n syn filters,,., looks dark but still has a good feel... motor has 204614mi on it now and runs very strong,,, starting to puff a little smoke if it sits at idle for a few minutes....

reason I'm asking is while I was in the middle of doing the tune up an old time customer stop by and began to drill me with questions like why don't I let a ASE mech do this for me,, and whats the gap on the plugs and why such a big header,, and so on, well he was trying to tell me that big exaust will hurt a high mileage motor,, I just kept working and listening,,, finished and started it up and on the 1st lick purrrrrrrrrrrrrr ,, his next words where will you take me for a ride,,, lol,,, so I did,, nice chilled cruise up the road and back,,. little peppy but stayed under 3,500 rmps,,, 35 mi zone anyway,,.

he was very impressed with how smooth and calm it was even though it sounds aggressive, a bit stiff because of the hypercos ,,,

should I be concerned about the mileage ?? the breathing heavy(smoke) after idling? ... other than the puff of smoke here and there the motor is showing no signs of power loss ,, I'm telling ya it runs great ,, no starting problems, idle problems...and as you can see the plugs are burning very clean and consisted

I'm very interested in hearing what you guys think.... many of you have alot more experience with the SR20's

Cool story... show people what the SR's are all about.

Personally I would just do what you are doing... And I think you should change those plugs out for sure.

I wouldn't be too concerned if it's just a little smoke upon start up. As far as that guy askng you all those questions... He just doesn't know about our cars, so he doesnt know what he's talking about.

I agree with Tommy.. That smoke is just probably a little condensation.
I would replace the plugs and only use NGKs. You should also change the PCV valve.

I drove my stock DE to 208K miles with over 4 years of boost on it, and it only really began to suffer when the rings started to fail. If you're not boosted and you're maintaining it right, it'll go a lot further than that, IMHO. I agree that the guy you were talking to didn't know what he was talking about. Why in the world would it take an ASE cert. technician to do your tuneup? That's just silly. You know your car better than said technician anyway.

no condensation...its oil for sure.
I have been following him a few times and it smells like oil when it smokes...its just at high rpm.
Last night we were sitting in our cars, idling, talking ****,when Larry revved up and a cloud came out....I was like
After that it was fine .
After a few mins more at idle...same thing

I can vouch for the way the car runs.It is still very strong.

haven't noticed any smoke at first start up ,, only real high rpms and idle for more than a few min..

and thats kinda what I figured,, he not knowing about our cars,, thats why I rely on you guys to keep me in tack .,.,

I've got great performance out of these +4's ,, fantastic fuel mileage.,. I just might try the NGK's next go around,, and I'll stop and get the PCV valve tomorrow ,,. forgot that part.,.

this make the second Nx I have (had) that exceeded 200,000 and both are still going very well,,, I keep the maintance up pretty good.,, It uses just a little over a 1/2 quart in between changes,, and as for ASE mech,,, there great when ya need them,, NOT,, lol your right we do know our cars better than they do unless they work on these everyday and thats not happening,, I've turned every nut and bolt on this car with the exception of Eggman lending a hand.,., I have no Problem working on it,, kinda like it.

I haven't seen it,, I can only go by what you say,, lol,, I just worry more than I should...

I'm going to just keep doing what I've been doing and worry when the time comes.,.

i would not worry about the mileage at all unless your boosted. mine is currently at 285k and still runs very strong. and it seems like you maintain yours very well, so expect a long time more for yours.

you basically answered your own question. car runs smooth, idles strong, pulls nice, good power. so why would you think you should be concerned ?

all my sr20's other then my current turbo motor have had 130k at least on them since the day i got them. they always ran awesome. my current daily driver has 230k on it and it runs like a dream. take care of them and they will stay together for a LONG time.

ohh and by the way get rid of those plugs. brk6s' should suit you perfectly.

stratton.
