Where exactly is this sensor on the transmission? I was under the car a few days ago and was looking for it. I did find a sensor on the bottom of the trans near the drain plug, was that it? I keep getting a code P1706 and it's that damn sensor. Smog test is coming up this summer.

There is a neutral position sensor and a reverse gear sensor. I'm pretty sure the one you saw by the drain plug is the reverse gear position sensor. The reverse gear sensor has the black rubber with grey wire loom and the plug is grey. The neutral position sensor should have the blue rubber with black wire loom and the plug is black.

Neutral position sensor on the left. Reverse gear position sensor on the right.

This is not the one you saw but this is the neutral position sensor.

Here it is in it's package.

Some of the other stuff affects drive-ability under certain conditions, like fuel cut during deceleration with the throttle closed, and enrichment while idling/poking along in traffic. Putting the ECU in "ignition timing/idle speed adjustment" mode (warmed up with TPS disconnected) also depends on the neutral switch. There are also a number of diagnostics that are affected.

Wow BenFenner you are awesome. Detailed pics and all.
Where exactly on the trans is that located? Is it hard to get to, and how much was the sensor?

Definitely. Ever since mine has been disconnected I have noticed little things like the engine acting differently while decelerating. Sometimes it takes a while for the idle to come down after coming to a stop etc. Ever since I converted to a B15 trans I haven't had these switches hooked up...it has been years.

-On a side note is that your mid-engined integra that was in SCC? That thing was wild! I just noticed it in your signature, and the link to the build thread for that matter. I was always interested in that ride and am looking forward to pouring over the build thread.

If you take a look at the picture of the neutral position switch (the one with the blue rubber) on the transmission you'll see it is towards the firewall and shift linkage below where the passenger side halfshaft enters the transaxle. It is easy to get to. The sensor was around $12-$14.

We bypass the neutral switch on Miata's all the time.

Doesn't seem to harm anything. Easier on the throwout bearing when using a stiff clutch.
