I wrapped the knob in duct tape to help protect the leather, then added a rag before using a large pipe wrench to get the leverage necessary to break the bond with the glue. If the leather is moving on the knob, you may not be able to save it.

I wrapped the shift knob with 4 layers of duct tape and used an 18in pipe wrench. I dont know if I had loosened the glue already with all the hand wrenching, but it came off extremely easily. Thanks for your advice.

Awesome! WD-40 is great at removing duct tape residue if you need to do any of that.

I used goo-gone and a rag/vise grip. It worked and preserved the knob, but it was ****ty which I was replacing it in the first place.

I actually used gorilla tape and it doesnt seem to leave residue unless its left on for long periods of time. I pulled it off right after I took the knob off and there was no residue on the leather.
