I have never owned either, and actually haven't driven the e46 M3 yet, but I'll let you know my experience.

I've driven an ASP1 S2000 and I wasn't impressed.

The bad:
It felt heavy, partially because it makes no power early on, partially because it's 250 lbs. up on my daily driver, and partially because it's not a tin can.

The digital bar tach annoyed the shіt out of me.

Clutch pedal take-up provides minimal feel.

Shifter felt like a cable actuated RSX shifter (best of the cable actuated shifters, but still "fake" feeling). And this from a rod actuated shifter? Wtf.

The Good:

Seating position and visibility around "A" pillar with top down is great, much better than a Miata (on par with the 3rd gen MR2).

Now for BMW, I've driven many of them. I've driven early 3 series, 5 series, Z3s, current 335i, etc. and I've always been pleasantly surprised. They have truly earned their "ultimate driving machine" reputation. I know what I like, and it would be a BMW over most other cars. If you need a drop-top, get an M3 convertible or the M version of the Z3 or whatever, just make sure it's a BMW and you'll be fine. =D

So it's ultra reliable? Sweet. I'm sure it is.

But you just said it was reliable. Who cares if it's been abused? As far as I'm concerned I prefer abused cars. I abuse my car on a daily basis.

You don't fix your own cars? Okay, it could get pricey.

You think go-fast parts for S2k's are cheap or cheaper than BMW parts? Think again man.

get a clean Z32 TT very very fun. But then again im biased =)

Dont sell it you will definitely miss your NX. I miss my 1st B14 that was wrecked every once in a while when I see my current B14. =(

Best idea yet. Test drives really open your eyes to what a car is really like.
