I dont think you're looking at the right bolt if its behind the oil filter tree. On the manifold there should be the 8 or so bolts near the runners that attach the manifold to the head. Then there will be a metal bracket (assuming its never been removed) or two that bolts to the underside of the intake manifold to the back of the block. Detach the bracket from the block, or the bracket from the intake manifold, or both, and then lift out the manifold. There will also be a few vac. lines that attach to the underside of the manifold that you will need to remove.

I know on my motor the oil filter tube had to be removed to get the lower half off. I had the motor out at the time so it was easier but i know I had to take it off without some special ratchet.

I finally got it off, I had to remove the oil filter bracket to get at the last bolt. Now i just need to figure out what to do with all this other ****. I have vac lines galore back there. I'm sure my 98 has about 10x the amount of 97's and under. I wonder if I can just get rid of some of them and cap them...

Yeah you can get rid of pretty much all of them, but your going to have CELs. All I'm running on my 98 is the fat hose for idle (Aux Air Control?), fpr, wastegate, and boost gauge. Evap vents to atmosphere and all the rest is capped off and unplugged. I don't have emissions and my CEL has the bulb removed.

The new problem now is that the manifold completely kinks the hose coming off the top of the power steering pump...so I need to figure out what to do about that.
