Thanks.. Glad to help guys.

I had the same rattle in my door. It ended up being screws missing at the bottom of the door handle. I thought the hole at the bottom was a drain, but later found that was for the screw to anchor the panel to the door panel support brace. The panel was also missing the big hidden screw which made the middle section vibrate. I have also glued a piece of foam on top of the support brace and behind the middle of the door panel. No more noises !

Some Local forum members call me Mr OEM because Im such a stickler for replacing all OEM screws, brackets and straps. What Im actually doing is keeping down rattles & other strange noises.

That's exactly what I am attempting to do. My friend has a car he's parting out and he laughs at me while I pore over it attempting to use the exact right screws and replace plastic bits.
Nobody has the little plastic tabs that go behind the plastic seat-belt guide into the door on the SE-R though.

Keep searching your local junkyards and check the forum classified for partouts. You will eventually find those SE-R plastic tabs..

They never have them.

Well today was it and had some fun re-aligning the window. Surprise; my speakers were wired in with just twisted wire. Now I know why they buzz but I had no connectors so I ghetto-crimped them with a needle nose.

The re were a few loos-ish bolts but the main noise in my case seemed to be coming where the styrofoam piece and door skin were separating from the fiber-board piece that makes the actual door contour on the top part. My solution was to fill it with a half-tube of bathroom caulk (all that I had) and clamp it down to set. I did break the plastic tab where the door hooks over the triangle shaped mirror plastic piece. Yay.

Thanks for the write-up again. Big help.

Ok well I took the door apart and now I found that some water got into it. It was dry but all the signs were there. No rust on the chassis... yet. I can see why these cars rust so easy they are hard to keep dry. Failing seals, and body panels that just soak up water.

So I took it to the carwash and it leaks in the window where the end of the mirror seal meets the a-pillar. This was expected I brought some shop-towels.

Is this just worn seals or is the door/window misaligned?

Benito -- let us know what you find. I've got the same rattle but have come to accept that I will never be able to fix it. Prove me wrong and give me hope!

Bill

SE-R door is much easier imo. Just follow scottys instructions and be just a smidge patient. Still haven't figured out exatly what was making the noise in either car but I did find several other things that I am not happy with so bonus.

Bill: I went through the whole door as best I could tightening things a bit and pulling stuff. It kept making the noise in the metal door frame. Finally I gave up and re-installed the interior panel meticulously which requires a bit of patience and contemplation but is straight forward. No more noise. ymmv.

Door Panel Removal Instructions
1. Remove all of the screws from around the door panel including the plastic one at the top of the panel at door jam.
2. Remove the plastic round push tab at the top rear of door panel.
3. Remove the screw inside the door pull. Now, slowly remove the plastic pieces. Now remove all of the door pull screws: the rusty one down at the bottom (some has the a plastic cap), two inside the slot at back of handle, and the hidden big one at the top described in #4 below.
4. Remove the large screw at top of slot inside of the door pull (its is located just inside the panel). Kinda hidden so if you peep up from the door latch handle into the slot, you'll see it)
5. If you have manual windows, remove the handle by taking out ring clip. Make sure that you catch the little clip when popping it out of the groove. Dont loose that clip.
6. DO NOT remove the door handle. Just remove the plastic piece under the door handle by lifting the handle and popping it out.
7. Gently raise the bottom section of the panel outward to clear the door handle support brace, while pushing-up on the panel. I usually start pushing up the front section using the handle and then the rear section.

Now, you are inside of the door & speaker (your finger will go thru the cheezy Nissan speaker if you press on it! So dont...). The plastic sheet is held in place with gooey black stuff. DONT get that black stuff on anything (its hell to remove). Carefully, peel back the plastic at a corner and let it hang down (dont rip it up). Check & tighten any screws/nuts. If any screw/nut are missing, its at the bottom of the door; find it and reinstall. Locktite is your friend.

Put the plastic back in place using the same gooey black stuff. It really does perform limited sound barrier but mostly protects the inside of the panel from moisture.

Hope this helps...

This should be a how-to. Very helpful.
