pinging or detonating under hard cornering
Hey, I'm having a huge problem with my VVL engine. Since recently ive noticed that when I corner hard to the left or drive at a quick pace over a rough or a road with a lot of undulations I hear noticable pinging or detonating from my engine... I never hear it at any other time. I've tried changing the oil, removed all dents from my oil pan, turned down timing to less than stock, increased fuel through my calum, however I am still plagued by the pinging. I am very worried and I really concerned that this will eventually lead to engine death. My mods are in my sig and I'm currently using 10-30 amsoil, someone help please?

Your sig isn't showing.

Are you sure it's ping? If it only happens while cornering or rough road, I would guess it's the CVs.

What RPM do you get the ping? what kind of gas do you use?

what are cv's? it happens at most of the lower rpm band, as long as im taking a corner or going over a rough road... dont know if it happens at higher as Ive not gone so fast around a corner and I def dont drive in high rpm over rough roads... and to top it off I probably wouldnt be able to hear the sound in higher RPM... that car is so damn loud

I use the highest octane available... 90 octane, but I didnt indicate that it recently started happening... Ive had this setup since about July

My mods:
sr20ve w/sr16 cams, ssac w/2.5 exhaust, walbro 255, calum basic, fidanza 9lb, 3" wai arm, ve maf...

I think a calum basic program with 90 octane is not going to be happy with 90 octane.

I think that program was designed for 93 octane.

Remember that Calum has more timing advance than JWT up to 3000 RPMs to get rid of the running problems in the lower RPMs.

I don't think u know what pinging sounds like. If it's only happening when ur cornering and not when ur going straight I doubt thats the problem. The CV boots aka axles clicking when ur turning.

Do you have aftermarket suspention (i.e. firmer ride)?

Well how I know its pinging is cuz I've owned a few sr20s for the past 5 years of my life and I also know its the engine cuz when I take my foot off the gas it goes away.

Also I have a stock sr20ve bin which I have modified for my purpose and I've only modified the WOT columns, so I'm not using a calum bin but a custom bin.... And I've been tuning my own ecu from the 1st set of calmum boards came out.

And finally I've never heard a noisy cV while going straight or over a bump. Especially when I don't hear it while making a full lock to any side.

Any other suggestions?

Ok how about the fuel filter? how old is it? Might want to adjust the lower part of the map and pull 2 deg out of it. Can you post a pic of your ign map?

i turned down mechanical/distributer timing from 15* to 10* to see if it was a timing issue. that didnt solve the problem. I guess my fuel filter could do with a change, ill try that.
