Tesla Model S
I think we need to remember this moment. As of this week, the game has officially changed and Tesla is the bearer of that news. The new Model S is, by all accounts I have seen, a great car with almost no downsides. With such a huge range and great performance, I cannot see much reason why it couldn't be anybody who can afford a BMW's DD. But the kicker is the unveiling of the start of their supercharger network. Here, you can fill your car with electrons for free, getting a 250+mile charge in 30 minutes. With a station near by me in Folsom, that means that with only a little inconvenience each week in going to the station to fill, I could literally not pay for "fuel" for my car for almost the whole year. And I could drive to LA and back, or SF, and not pay a cent. And it is all coming from solar power (yes, there is a slight catch, but it is net positive on that front). Also, I would have almost no maintenance costs. Brakes and tires every few years. Maybe new batteries after 8 years. Struts/suspension parts, no idea.
Here's a review of the car and its range:

A look at the suspension pieces shows that the suspension wasn't an after thought in the design of this EV:

And the Supercharger network:

This may signal the time when daily driver cars change for good to EVs and that soon we may be able to drive from coast to coast without paying a cent in "fuel". And then we have more money to put into our weekend toys!

Am I the only one really excited about this?!?

EVs will just keep getting better. 10 years from now, we'll be wondering how we've come so far. But the general public doesn't hear of the new technologies coming available... or even ones that have been available for years.
