Thread: How To: Clean The MAF/AFM

Here is a quick guide of the process I use to clean my maf it can remedy hesitations, power loss and help to restore MPG.

Tools

Carb Cleaner
Screwdriver
Small soft bristled paint brush

Method

First you will need to remove the sensor from the MAF housing, while being careful not to knock it or drop it.... (You dont have to remove the whole thing from the car I just using these for examples)
They may require a bit of wiggling to remove.





Once it is removed you can see the two wire elements that deal with measuring the air, when these
get dirty they can provide false readings which can cause issues.





The carb cleaner sprays out with quite a bit of force so be prepared, holding the can about 15-20cm away spray the two wire elements with a couple of short bursts from both sides.





Now that they are wet, spray some more into a small container then dip the brush in.




Now the common misconception is that the elements are VERY delicate whilst this is true in the way they measure the airflow they are actually quite strong. (though dont go mad obviously).

using the wet brush wipe over both sides of the elements this will be helping to remove anything that is stuck to them.




spray them a few more times to remove any loosened dirt, when you are happy they are clean,



Once they are dry, carefully re-assemble them into their housing and reap the benefits

I would not use carb cleaner on your maf! Buy the MAF sensor cleaner, it's $8 a can but well worth it and will not damage the wires.

Those screws can be a royal pain to break loose. My advice pick a very good bit and use a drill. Since our hands are not torque enough with regular screw drivers, you will more then likely strip it by hand. If you also don't pick the properly sized bit, you will strip it with the drill too!

I'm working on mine right now and I gave a little thought to using my drill on it. But I quicky noticed there's not very much room in that area (at least there isn't on my p11). So I grabbed this old angled bit driver (hand driven). The screws on mine take the phillips that's one size smaller than the common standard size (not good with remembering those sizes, sorry). The screw is also slotted, but who in their right mind would use a flathead given the choice? Since the end of the angled driver is fairly small it allows you to hold the bit into the screw with one hand, and turn the handle with the other. They came loose pretty damn easy this way. Use your best judgement which method to use but I will totally agree that a normal hand screwdriver is a bad idea.
