Guess I was just over concerned about part quality since the boots on my '86 taurus only lasted 30k miles. All of these parts are probably decent currently. My g20 boots were good to go almost 160k miles but both outers went within 1500 miles of each other. So, its time to do these.

By the way ianh, can you describe your universal band and clamping tool a little?

when i redid my boots after i had done this writeup , i used the ear type of clamps and used this tool




i think the universal boot clamp pliers look like thiks



and this is how the ear type of clamp & tool should look

What type of clamps are more common and usually come with boot kits? Someone here just used a tire patch tool to secure clamp. I want to do a quality job and just once to last 10 years.

hahah yeah that was me!!

i ddnt have the tool with me ( happaned at home ) so i just improvised.

the typical boot clamp is the " ear " type . see post #33

OOPS! But it's OK if it does a great job on that type of clamp.

yeah it was only temporary because the following week i got the EMPI boot kit

Excellent answer from Amave #33 above, thanks !!!
BTW I dont have the tool for the ear type, so have used pliers that have the cutting edge shaped the same as the tool, just dont squeeze too hard !!!

And i have the universal band tool shown above.

yeah i've used those types of plier too, just make sure you just tighten the clamp enough to have the clamp not move around
