P11 - Maximize WHP for Minimal $$$
So... I don't have a whole bunch of money to throw around. I have a stock SR20de and 5 speed manual transmission in a '99 G20t. It's a heavy car, but it's really nice and I'm loving it so far. What are some of the most cost effective ways for me to increase the whp? Also, I would like to pass smog inspection with minimal effort. So anything that would make it fail smog would need to be easily put back to stock when the time comes. Trying to come up with a plan to make this car a little more fun to drive and entertaining to ride... Please help.

I would say intake, header, and some cams should keep you smog legal and add a little fun. Also add some timing and run premium gas, if needed you can always back it down for inspection.

Edit: I am gong to add that seeing you are new and already a few common posts is to start reading before posting. There is a lot of info on the forum and everything you are asking about has been talked about before.

Set your timing @ 19. Get a used CARB approved JWT pop charger. Look for some used JWT S4 cams. They go for like $350 usually. There are cheaper brands though, like Tomei, you can used for $200 but they don't make as much power. I wouldn't mess with the header because of the EGR and 02 sensor(s) if you are worried about smog stuff.

Just about every single SR had a EGR system and a O2 sensor. What this means is every single aftermarket header comes with provisions for both systems. What this means is an aftermarket header will pass emissions.visual/smog just as any stock header...............

Back on topic:

1) DEs respond VERY well (both N/A and epecially turbo) to JWT S4s cam and they are worth their weight in gold. JWT specifically developed the S4s with the DE in mind, so hence why they yield more power than the competition over a broader powerband and more consistent
2) 2.5" SS headers are also another good bang for the buck to free up some flow
3) A proper 2.5" exhaust with provisions for a CAT and a generously size reonator (keeps the decibles low) with a stock appearing muffler will also wake it up a little as well as get you past emissions/smog/visual
4) The difference between a CAI and a WAI are negligible, so whatever floats your boat. If you run a fender CAI, make sure it is sealed away from the elements (read: watch out for water)
5) Upping timing to 17degrees. But be aware: Upping the timing requires a minimum of 91 octane (but HIGHLY recommended you run 93 or higher). So although it garners power, over the long run, it WILL cost you money in gas.
6) A simple JWT ECU with a reflash should top it all off and make good on all your bolt ons.

Those means are fairly simple as you can find all those parts (sans the ecu as the NA setup is few and far between) here on the forum second hand which also keeps a majority of the costs in check

Good luck!

Dude. Thank you so much for this reply. This is probably the answer I've been able to find that addresses my questions specifically.

I do apologize for asking about some very basic topics that probably can be found elsewhere in the forum (but more likely would need to be compiled from several different posts). I'm somewhat new to these types of forums, but I assure you that I did do a fair amount of searching before finally deciding to just post this. And it so happens that I got the answer I needed and can move on to searching for parts and reading up in the tech section the how-to's what-nots (which is a lot more black and white than my grayish question).

Being in California, I wouldn't mess with an aftermarket header. If there's no approval # cops can say it's illegal. If you get an exhaust, get a small tip to not attract attention.

Kojima (Mike) told us a story one year how he was pulled over in his hometown in California for the FACTORY B14 fog lights and told they were illegal. Lol

For sure. Our cops are pretty dickish sometimes... plus I live in a small bar town next to a college town...
