actually i think it would be more than that if it was done right... 6-8 would be more pheasable..if you take into consideration machining is the most important part and one of the most expendsive ie:

decking head
decking block
cleaning head
cleaning block
balancing the rotating assemble
lightening the complete rotating assembly
honing block
bored over (if pistons require it)
knife edging the crankshaft (if wanted)
coating pistons
coating valves (if wanted done)
coating bearings (if done)
valve job
headwork (if needed)

most of the stuff i listed as if done or wanted is almost a must have for high horsepower applications. i couldnt see spending less than 1500.00-2000.00 for good machine work, and thats if you have no head work done\ medoure valve job..otherwise tack on at least 500.00-800.00

then you have the transmission which would be ideal to inforce it with cyro treating and all that which is probably another 800.00 maybe less but its all up to the builder, but done right varies from person to person

^^^I was just estimating on the low side so people didn't come back with some low budget list to prove me wrong.

I would really say about $7000 if you want quality parts and such. My light W11 DET build cost me $3000 and that's just to ensure it will hold together @ 400hp on occasion and that's just the engine.

WoW.... you guys are over thinking this.
VE Motor - $1200
Eagle Rods - $200
Wiesco Pistons - $425
SC61 - $600
Protech Manifold - $500
Necessary Machining - $175
EMS Stinger 4424 (installed & Street tuned) - $1600
Grand Total of $4700

Let me mention, VE motor is not necessary.
EMS Stinger Standalone was not necessary either.

The SR20DE or DET are very stout motors.

What about a tranny, clutch, downpipe, injectors, MAF, exhaust, radiator, and all the small things that add up?

You are right, but let's consider this:
He already has a U13 swap; therefore, you can nullify the price of the motor.
Standalone is not necessary, JWT or Calum will suffice. $4700-$1200 (motor) - $1600 (Standalone) + $500 (JWT) = $2400

The stock tranny will hold the power. If you want to spend $900 on a B15 or P11..fine. $2400 + $900 = $3300

Injectors - $3300 + $300 (740cc Sidefeeds) = $3600

Why do you need a radiator? The car already comes with one

Downpipe + Exhaust - $3600 + $400 = $4000

Clutch - $4000 + $400 = $4400

MAF = $4400 + $125 (Z32 MAF) = $4525

IC Pipes = $4525 + $100

=$4625

Ok you are right, it will cost him $4625.

also forgetting the machine work to actually be able to assemble the motor, yes he can assemble the motor himself but:

balancing assembly
lightening assembly
decking head
decking block
cleaning head
cleaning block
honing block
boring block (depending on pistons)
coating pistons
coating valves
headwork
valve job

and a slew of other work that might be needed depending on his build he cant do himself. so i would say at least 1000-1500 for the machine work depending on what needs to be done

not to mention:

camshafts
cam gears (if needed)
valve springs
retainers
ect

you can budget build high horsepower and 500+whp is in every sense of high horsepower, leaving out the slightest part to save money on a high horsepower build is dumb

Then call me dumb because I didn't do any of the highlighted parts and the car ran perfect for 1 yr. before the headgasket gave. BTW, the car was daily driven; 50-60 miles daily.

well it is building a motor. i gues i just build motors a different way than everyone else, to each their own. i also dont spare expenses when it comes to motors either so that might be the mentality behind it too.

also dont forget the blow off valve and wastegate i dont think those things were mentioned either

kind of my thought, planning on sleeving it, putting it together w/ forged internals and leaving the rest up to the turbo and tuning...besides headwork.

I swapped the bluebird in for around 1500 TOTAL, with the cost of the motor.
