Why is no one using Holsets on their VVL/VET motors?
Holsets have been in use in practically every other engine configuration. The old HX's did a great job for the guys on a budget; quick spool, awesome power, OEM reliability and easily rebuildable.
The newer HE351 / HE341's are some of the most advanced turbo/fin designs and people have been making huge power with them, not to mention the crazy quick spool characteristics. Another plus is, they are easy to get by in the USA.

So it's surprising to me no one is using these on their sr20ve / sr16ve builds. Is there a particular reason for that?
I'm asking as I'm going down this path but I want to know for sure before i bite the bullet.

From what i could gather, it seems the ve's respond better to big turbine housings (.63 or larger in a gt30 sized turbo?). The he351cw for instance is a +600hp capable turbo and will make positive boost under 3k rpm on a 2liter. But it's turbine housing is only 9cm2 (a/r 0.63) with a mega huge 4" elbow/downpipe. Now, will this still respond well in a ve or is it going to cause reversion due to the smaller turbine housing (back pressure buildup?)? This is the only reason i could think of why HE's arent being used.

BUT, the older HX's carry huge turbine housings, for instance one of the turbine's i'm interested in is a HX35 7 blade twin scroll with a 14cm2 housing (a/r 0.9 or so). Now this would seem like an ideal setup on a VE-T. Price wise they go for $500 brand new, make tons of boost and go on forever. There are tons of choices for the big power guys as well. So why am i having such a hard time finding a similar combo on a ve? Hopefully someone doesn't mine to elaborate

I like the hx series i would do a hx40 on a ve, my only issue is the room, they are large.

Because the SR20 community is some follow the leader bullshit. Everyone runs the same setups. I say go for it, I was going to use a Holset a few years back on my car. There are a few guys on here who have ran them.

As mentioned before, they are physically large turbos. Alot of VG30 guys love to run them and make great power, but you need the room to mount them. Most are T3 or T4 flanged.

Well i for one hate to follow I like to use parts that are proven. Not everything that works needs to be expensive.

I'm just hoping on finding an HE351CW with the twin scroll 12cm housing before my motor assembly is finished... So I got like 6 months to find that turbo

I know there are T2 Holsets as well that can make 500hp with LESS lag than a GT2871R. Look for the HX32's with the 4-7cm housing

My last set up on my 200sx is a holset hx40 with a BEP .70 t3 housing with a custom 67mm billet compressor wheel, 10 blade turbine wheel. I have been using holsets since I upgraded to large frame turbos and had a few garrett based turbos take a shit on me. It all started with a basic 8 blade holset before modifying it and even that turbo was a monster, my good friend who doesnt post here much has been using a hx35 for the past 4 years with great success.

Here is what i learned with my venture with both turbos.

The hx35 is a solid turbo, you will have no issues the 12cm back housing is well sized for our setups.

Holset turbos seem large, but reality is they do not perform how they look, these turbos spool well for their size and do not fall off ever, you will run out of rpm before your power dips off.

The HX40 comes in a variety of sizes, people saught after the 7 blade hx40, my 8 blade which is a smaller variant performs just as well

The hx40 suffers from breaking the turbine shaft, I know because this happened to me and its a very popular issue on line. (hence why i upgraded to a 67mm billet wheel and 10 blade turbine wheel)

These are oil only turbo and use metric fittings.

Oil Drain size is very important, you will never get a direct answer whether to use a restrictor or not, some will say they do not need and the answer is to make sure your oil drain is sized adequately. I personally use a restrictor, and a high flowing drain but i also use a -4an feed line, some use as big as 6an, if you choose to not use a restrictor use -3an and a large drain.

i didn't get a chance to run this turbo on my vvl, (i pulled the motor to refresh and replaced it with a high compression roller rocker) that being said i dynoed at 390whp @ 16psi on e85, the map had some cleaning up to do but i had to stop because i had boost control issues. The turbo does exhibit some lag and i have to be honest i am not the person to tell you how much lag is too much because i am use to bigger turbos but from a 4th gear roll i would say you will get full boost around 4k rpms.
They are easy to repair, and any turbo diesel shop can repair them.
Honestly the hx35 is best sized turbo for our set up and the most reliable.


Do not let anyone shy you away from using these turbos, most people are not leaders and many are afraid to try something and fail thats why many people just mimic other known working setups.
