Uh...it catches it. Hence the name 'oil catch can' as opposed to the 'stop losing oil can'

I'm curious, at what point is a catch can necessary? School me I'm a newb on this subject..

Seems to me that it's more of a tired worn out engine issue or a boosting crank case issue?

Depends who you ask and what you use it for. 1000ft race cars can fill a "catch can" in a single pass down the strip. So it's not just our tired old DE's.

Many people with newer DI turbocharged engines use a combination of "catch cans" and clean side separators to capture as much oil/gas vapor/condensation from caking up the back side of the intake valves subsequently covering the charge pipes and intake manifold in oil. This is a really big problem with the BMW crowd. Some manufactures are jumping on a DI + port hybrid fuel injection systems to get the best of both worlds and as an added benefit the fuel cleans the backside of the intake valves. Ex. FRS/BRZ - and now the new raptor ecoboost engines.

I have a 13' F150 ecoboost and everyone on the ecoboost forums swear by them as if it is black vodoo Magic. I personally rather install meth injection to clean the valves and keep my IAT's in check. 

Then you have the guys like the local guy here with his DSM who seems to think that the catch can frees up a couple of ponies. 

I'm sure the blow by in my case is from the worn out DE, it's more of a band aid than a fix. But if done right it can actually be benificial to even a freshly rebuilt engine.
