Shot peening > cryo treating.

Ah, I see Ben has shown the light already.

I think you should find out for a fact how they were made to begin with before considering treatment. If the have already been case hardned or carburized or anything like that you could cause more problems. If you can find out how they were made though I'm sure you could find a way to increase their strength.

Also what benfenner said is right too, if you want to improve the gear strength you'll probably need to do more than a surface treatment (that will only really improve wear characteristics and fatigue lifetime)

Thanks for the information guys. It's greatly appreicated. I drove all over junk yard row, and didn't find a single P11 LSD or NON LSD transmission. They had TONS of QR trannies, and MR trannies. I thought about the whole 6 speed swap, but don't really have the time or technical know how to do it easily. I know there's a how to thread, but IIRC there is quite a bit of modification required.

Looks like I'm going to be surfing the internet for a while.

imagine getting the g20 lsd trans and having that worked lol

you are going to be pushing some real nice numbers i personally wouldnt chance it, but thats just me, i wouldnt want a weak link in a setup mking over 500.

not only that but you would really benifit in your setup with a lsd that is for sure

jgy will say anything to sell you a set, and he has no experience in the process.......anyone can read a brochure..

i have done a set for a friend of mine about 4yrs ago and he beats the hell out of the car when he drives it, the gears held up so long i forgot i even did it for him. So yes, cryo treated gears help as long as they are done in the proper process.

I agree with most of the members, get the LSD tranny

I've never heard of an '00 G20 having the '99 style tranny before. Have you seen this with your own eyes?

i would say maybe do the 6sp swap with the 20v bellhousing and qr gears, but i hear it doesnt fit that well in the b13/14, but fits like a charm in the b15.

What actually did you mean by cryo treatment? Anyone care to explain what it is?

Ok so from what google has to tell me cryotreatment is nothing more than converting the steel to martensite

In that case that will definitely help their life (but you need to have a certain %Carbon in the steel for it to work don't remember how much).

Anyways then this is more than just a surface treatment and would greatly increase the strength of the gears but also make them more brittle.

tekkie i will tell you my opinion on your sitaution.

a little back round, ive been threw 2 stock b13 5 spd lsd trannies. i just removed my SHOTPEENED and CYRO TREATED b13 5 spd lsd trannie, the case was reinforced with steel plate and also the axle webs were filled with weld.

guess what FITH ! gear pop out !! reall pissed me off.

i just installed a 01 p11 5 spd lsd trannie with 40k on it into my turbo nx. i have a bit more griding to do with the shift linkage and the stablizer bar but when its all said and done it will be 100%.

the p11 is your best bet, longer final drive, longer first and second all equat to a better tranny for a big turboed car. its more compact internally, no sepration on the input shaft, less internal vibration etc etc. the gears are also much beefier, bascially the entire design is that of strength and longevity. the inside is designed and arranged differently then a b13, with that being said it eliminates all the faulty characteristics of the b13/b14 design. the case is much thicker and the axle inputs are reinforced oem style.

sr20turbofreak has put down 500whp with no hiccups, many others have ran it for several years at big whp with no problems. i also believe jose (nxspainard) has one and he just put down 400whp this month.

dont waste your time or money trying to improve the doomed to fail b13 tranny.

i hope ive helped.

stratton.

^^^ Believe this guy, he breaks alot of trannys... I'm buying a 01' P11 tranny this week for m b13, why spend all that money on your build, turbo, suspension, brakes, electronics and neglect the one known weak spot on our cars. Do it right not for right now...
