Thread: Compressor housing loose even with bolts tightened

it could possibly be an o-ring. i know the kit came with one (it was a holset universal rebuild kit), but the rebuild procedure didn't mention to put an o-ring around the compressor side between the external housing.

but like i said before, this issue just started recently. i've been able to drive my car boosted up to 10 psi w/o issues when i rebuilt it.

those are the numbers i assume them to be or best guess since the data plate got messed up from the previous owner. however, Gpop turbo shop in AZ was able to get me the right pieces.

looking at the build, there should be lock washers between the clamp plates and the bolts. Are these present? P/N for these is 3518004

yup. lock washers are present with each bolt

so i was able to fix the problem. I was able to take the compressor housing off. cleaned up the clamps and installed the housing again. after that it didn't move. however, after i took it for a test drive, it was still giving me issues after 5psi.

i'm thinking the jerking from the motor caused the compressor housing to eventually get loose since the compressor outlet is connected to the intercooler piping which doesn't have a lot of flexibility.

Will it not make more than 5 psi? Sounds like you may be missing a gasket for the compressor housing.

it does make more than 5psi... but it's got a thrill with it, intermittent interruptions. don't want to push it beyond that since i don't know the cause. i noticed about a 1mm side to side shaft play when i took the compressor housing off though. the compressor wheel wasn't rubbing on anything though even with the housing on.

the confusing part is it didn't have an issue for the 2 yrs i've had it until recently. there's no mention of gaskets or o-rings in the rebuild manual. so it might just be the turbo.

i probably just need a new turbo or have to get it rebuilt again.

UPDATE:
I contacted Gpop in AZ, they said it's normal for the compressor housing to have some play when the clamps aren't tightened on the compressor housing. So it should be fine.
Now I have to figure out what's causing the thrill after 5psi, whether it's tune or turbo.
