I'm gonna post on this one, and give you props. Aluminum is one of the hardest metals to weld. Looking at your welds, they may not be "pretty", but they look like they'll all seal. It looks like you didn't dip the tungsten into the pool either (unless you polished the black away).

Another big props I give you is the difficulty of this project. It may not seem too difficult, but getting the arc to stay steady around a relatively small dia tube isn't easy either. I'm assuming you had to do a lot of the welds free hand (not resting your torch hand on the piece).

Finally, TIG welding is an "art" that you get better at the more you do it. I have my moments where I throw down beautiful welds, but then I don't pick up the torch for a few months and IMO I suck at it.

For me aluminum is easy, stainless steel is harder to weld imo.

BTW props to you for making your own stuff.

W/o derailing this thread too much farther, SS and mild steel weld the same to me. Aluminum is completely different in the way you have to control the pool. It's a lot more foot control and dab technique vs. steel has a tendency to be more forgiving. Thin wall SS I'll give you that, but IMO any thin wall material you have to be careful with.

I take it you made your way into my build thread lol. It's my first dab at a turbo project, and honestly the first time I picked up a TIG in a while. After a couple days I started to pick up "the technique", but then the project was finished...

[flame suit on for making a turbo kit for a GA.... lol]

The title of the thread again in case anyone missed it "If you could make your own manifold" lol If that doesnt give it away I dont know what does.

This is about people doing things on their own. Whether some are great at welding and others are not so great. It really doesnt matter.
