We have brass synchros which will be destroyed by GL-5 gear oil. It is becoming more and more difficult to find the GL-4.

Royal Purple Gear Oil

It says it is for GL-4.

However, I would stick with a gear oil that designed purely for a GL-4 application.

Red-Line MT-90 is the best I have used, period.

There was a GL4/5 debate in Coheed(or Ashton's) thread a while back.
The MT90 isnt thick enough for racing. but the valvoline that i just drove about 50 miles on, is very nice.

Again ive used mt-90 and so has a buddy with his b15 trans in his ve 200 and the mt-90 made for really really notchy gears, whinning on the highway, and just an overall very bad shift feel. He switched to mobil 1 and most of those problems went away. For na cars I like the mobile 1 but for boosted cars, heavy gear oil like the valvoline 85w-140 is awesome stuff. Its not as thick as shockproof but it allows all the bearings to be oiled properly and it has better shock resistant properties than the Redline shockproof.

Again this is 100 percent experience on this. Ive broken a trans on every single other gear oil besides the 85w-140. And that trans was beaten longer and harder than all the rest that broke soo quickly. That and the shifts are smooth as butter. This whole gl4 gl5 debate is nonsense. Especially when talking about our trannies in a boosted car. Do you know how long it would take for the syncros to get eaten away by gear oil. We are talking a matter of probably 10 years. The only reason behind the whole gl4 gl5 properties is longevity. In a boosted car its not likely our trans will last 10 years of being boosted. So who cares.
