Problem could be canceled by switch off / switch on of the ignition.
I had a similar problem with a jdm b15 sunny. Sometimes the transmission would stay in 3rd and the engine would be limited to about 3500 rpm. The transmission would stay in 3rd even when moving off from a dead stop so the acceleration was rubbish. After doing the self diagnosis and having it scanned with a proper scanner it was found that
A/T revolution sensor was malfunctioning. After that was fixed the car worked perfect. Other that just reading trouble codes it might help if you can get a scanner that can view the live data that the ECU and TCU sees from its various sensors.
The A/T revolution sensor is one of the 'speed' sensors on the transmission. Newer cars started using ABS to get the speed signal for the speedometer i think so instead of 2 'speed' sensors on the transmission there was only one, the A/T revolution sensor.
