To make 500hp you don't really need it. It may hurt you more than help.

That's true.
I had a Pulsar motor in my car for 10 years and the response was good. I put the VVL head on and to be honest it feels better than my pulsar ever felt with the same mods and i still have the stock manifold and throttle body. It's nice to be different sometimes though.
