MAF in IC Piping
Is there any reason that a maf sensor couldn't be taken out of it's housing and installed directly into the IC piping creating a blow through setup without the hassle of cutting the pipe to install the maf housing?

I feel like this would save the space in the bay that would otherwise be taken up by running the housing itself. Anything wrong with doing this?

yes it can and it has been done before

You have to get the pipe diameter right the same size or a retune. It is easier with some MAFs than other too.

Thanks for the input. Since most maf housings seem to be 3", are you saying that I would need to run 3" cold side piping to the IM if I was looking to do this?

Not at all if anyone says that I disagree completely as long as you don't get voltage over run you will be fine.

The inside diameter around the sensor is what needs to be matched if you are not doing a retune. The Z MAFs are 60mm instead of 3in so you can cut a slice long ways in some 3in pipe and weld it back up and it will be good. If you are using a stock SR MAF you would match that silver dollar sized hole. You don't need the whole length to be the same size you just want to copy the section of the maf. And of follow the basic rules for MAF placement, ie away from bends and Throttle bodies, recirc valves blow off valves, and so on

ezspoolin why do you think when stock sr mafs get bored out the ecu needs a reflash or retune?

From my personal experience 3" is about right. I maxed out my Lightning Maf in a 2.75" pipe @ 17psi.

I use a blow through MAF in the IC cold pipe, before the Throttle Body.

This one...
