GT2871R Fitment Issues(odd) Need Grinding Advice
Hey,

So, we've ground down all the usual places a turbo hits the block. I'm using an Avenir manifold w/2871R clocked down.

The 2871R is hitting the block at an unusual place and maybe someone else has also had this problem. It's hitting some sort of drain bolt or something on the DET block kind of right in the middle of the compressor housing(and the block).

I need to grind this down, but I don't know if it's for oil/coolant or possibly nothing at all. I feel a little uncomfortable grinding away a bolt that could potentially cause a leak or worse. I was thinking of grinding the compressor housing down instead or doing 50/50.

Anyone else run into this problem area? Anyone know what that bolt is for? Advice? Doesn't hit this spot w/a T25 or GTI-R T28.

Had same issue with 3071R with Avenir manifold.

Clocking it up buys you some room and grinder does to. I haven't seen an SR20 motor in a year and can't remember what it was. I do remember I took it out, taped deeper, added RTV to threads and reinstalled before grinding down most of the plug. I also removed a little material from compressor housing.

GTIR manifold is better fitment.

i got a gtir mani with a gt3076r on it, i had to grind down the block about where one of the trann bolts thread into, had to do so in order to make room so the inlet housing wouldnt hit the block. i also clocked my turbo outlet up

Ya, if I had to do it over I think I would have gotten a GTI-R manifold instead.

I think the way you did it is the 'proper' method. My turbo barely hits that spot, so I don't think I have to grind much. I think I may be able to get away w/just grinding the housing and a little off that plug without taping the threads deeper. I'm also assuming you did this before the car had fluids, otherwise you would have known what that plug leads to.

Sounds from your description that you hit the exact spot I am. Unforateunly the first time we put the turbo on, no one noticed it and the fins dug into the housing and I had to pay Garrett $$ to repair a brand new turbo lol

I wouldn't grind on the compressor housing too much, (or any) if you don't have to. Is it the allen headed bolt? I was able to just gring it down about 1/4 - 3/8 of an inch to make mine work with the bluebird manifold.

I have an Avenir Manny and I had to grind the living **** out of that bolt lol. You can go really depp though without it leaking...ask me how I know.

Ya, I think it's allen head. Looks like a drain bolt of some sort. There's another bolt just like it right below it. If I remember correctly, it's recessed in a threaded hole, it's not sticking out at all I think. Like a transmission drain/fill plug.

could take the mani to a machine shop and have the flange milled down, it will bring the turbo up, I know that's how people do it on gti-r manifolds.
