Crushing stock BOV?
Can I crush it to let less air through and get a better idle? This my idea of a temp fix until I get through a little post-holidays financial bottle neck. I'll probably get a JGS or something soon.

Here's more details;

My idle has been pretty high and hunts a lot before it settles. Leaks are almost certainly the problem. My BOV (BB DET) is mounted cold side on a blow through rig and vents to the atmosphere.
I am almost positive its leaking; I get no boost in first gear since I installed it after initially firing up a few ties w/o.

well cant you put your hand over the opening of the bov and see if its leaking? at idle

Apparently (I'm told) all regular BOVs leak at idle. I am not recirculating it, but yes when I put my hand over it the idle gets better. That's why I am thinking about crushing it to tighten things up.

My buddy with the avenir stock bov, with blowthru, leaks in idle, I have a GTi-R setup with blow thru with a DSM bov and it doesn't leak at all at idle.

well if i was going to crush it i would do it little at a time, kinda like when you adjust the screws on type s you wouldnt want to crush it too much to the point where it doesnt open and you get compressor surge.

Thanks guys. Well the spring in the stock BOV is apparently quite sloppy. Maybe crushing it a bit and buying a DSM is the way I'll go. Anyone else run a DSM 1G blow through like this?

bov's blow off boost trapped between the compresser and a closed throttle plate.........how you ask? a valve is held against an air tight seat by a stiff spring, when the throttle plate is closed and vacuum is created it over rides the stiff spring.

with that said its normal for a BOV to open slightly when at idle...............however if this is makeing your engine idle poorly you do not have the pipeing setup. unless you are running blow through and the BOV is placed BEFORE the MAFS the valve should be recirc'd.

Thanks that helped zero.

LOL...Get a vacuum gauge and you can slightly crush it to see when the valve opens at your specified vacuum level. There really is no way to keep it completely closed at idle..Just stick a hose with a filter on the end. However, If you want your dsm/bb bov to hold lots of boost I can lead you in the right direction.

Edit: Not sure if this helps for idle but look into it.

Thanks. Well I crushed the stocker and it works better. I am going to buy a DSM and see how it goes. I still get no boost in first gear. I don't understand. I guess a pressure test or smoke machine is in order.
